Languages and translation

Mimir replies in the language the customer writes in. It works this out from the message itself, using its own judgement rather than a fixed setting.

That's right almost all of the time. This article covers the cases where it isn't, and the settings that give you more control.

Translation settings

Settings → Translation controls automatic translation:

Enable Auto Translation — translate messages into additional languages automatically. This is so that you and your team can read and send messages across languages. With this enabled, you can write a message in English and send it in Italian or Arabic.

Translate signatures — also translate signatures to match the recipient's language. Worth knowing: translation can affect formatting, so signatures with complex layouts, images or particular styling may not survive it cleanly.

Main language — your primary language.

Additional languages — the others you support.

Chat text is per region

The chat widget's own wording — the greeting, the input placeholder, the queue messages, the rating screen, the privacy notice — is separate from the AI's replies. It's configured under Settings → Channels → your chat channel → Text, with a tab per region.

Every string has a built-in default in the language for that region, so you only need to edit the ones you want to change. Defaults ship in English, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Italian, German, Dutch, French and Spanish. A region that isn't covered by one of those falls back to English.

Writing per-market instructions

If you want a different style rather than a different language for a particular market, Notes can be limited by region, which is the right place for policies that genuinely differ by market.

Multiple markets, one inbox

If you run several country sites through one email address, everything lands in the same place and Mimir works out the language per message. If your markets have genuinely different policies, prices or stock, it's usually cleaner to run an email address per region so region-specific notes, resources and product data line up with the conversations they apply to.
